Nickel: No Current Federal Limit

Nickel is one of the few metals on this list without any current federal drinking water standard — not because it's considered harmless, but because of regulatory history.

What It Is

What the EPA Says

The EPA proposed a Maximum Contaminant Level for nickel in the early 1990s, but it was withdrawn following legal challenge and was never finalized — nickel remains unregulated at the federal level today. That's a gap in the regulatory framework, not a safety conclusion.

Nickel can enter water from natural geological deposits, from stainless-steel plumbing fixtures and well components, or from industrial discharge in some areas.

Signs to Look For

  • No reliable taste, smell or color indicator
  • Stainless-steel plumbing fixtures or well components
  • A known sensitivity to nickel (some people react to it even at low exposure)
  • No recent comprehensive water test, since nickel isn't flagged on standard municipal reports
How We Fix It

Reverse Osmosis System

Reverse Osmosis System

Reverse osmosis filtration reduces nickel along with other dissolved metals, giving you a meaningful result even though there's no federal standard requiring it.

Nickel: Common Questions

Not currently at the federal level. The EPA proposed a limit in the early 1990s that was withdrawn after legal challenge and never finalized.

Natural geological deposits, stainless-steel plumbing fixtures and well components, and in some areas, industrial discharge.

Unregulated doesn't mean automatically harmless at every level — people with nickel sensitivities in particular may want it reduced. Reverse osmosis is the most effective option we offer for it.
