Sediment & Turbidity: Cloudy or Sandy Water

Cloudy, hazy or visibly gritty water — especially right after heavy rain, nearby construction, or any work on a well pump — is almost always sediment: fine sand, silt or mineral particles suspended in the water.

What It Is

Where It Comes From

On a private well, sediment usually comes from the well itself — sand or silt drawn in with the groundwater, or rust and scale breaking loose from aging well casing or plumbing. On municipal water, turbidity (water's cloudiness, caused by suspended particles) can briefly spike after a water main break, hydrant flushing, or heavy rain overwhelming a treatment plant. It's usually not a direct health risk from the particles themselves, but sediment can clog aerators and appliances, and in wells it can also signal that bacteria has an easier path into your water supply.

Signs to Look For

  • Cloudy, hazy or gritty-looking water, especially right after it's drawn
  • Sand or grit settling at the bottom of a glass left standing
  • Clogged faucet aerators or shortened appliance filter life
  • Cloudiness that appears suddenly after heavy rain, construction, or well pump service
How We Fix It

Prefilter System

Prefilter System

A whole-home prefilter stage strips out sand, silt and other suspended particles right where water enters your home — protecting every fixture, appliance and filtration stage downstream from grit damage and clogging.

FAQ

Sediment & Turbidity: Common Questions

Occasional mild cloudiness from a disturbed water main is usually not a direct health risk on its own, but persistent sediment, especially on a well, is worth testing, since it can also indicate an easier path for bacteria to enter your water.

Heavy rain, nearby construction, a water main break, hydrant flushing, or recent well pump service can all stir up sediment that was previously settled — it often clears on its own within a day or two, but recurring cloudiness points to a more permanent source.

A properly sized whole-home prefilter captures the vast majority of sand, silt and rust particles before they reach your fixtures — we size it based on your actual water test and household demand.
