General Water Quality

Understanding What's In Your Water

Even water that looks perfectly clear can carry dissolved minerals, chlorine or chloramine disinfection byproducts, trace metals, and — depending on your source — pesticides, PFAS ("forever chemicals") or bacteria. A free in-home water test is the only way to know exactly what's in your specific water, since it varies block to block and well to well.

It depends heavily on whether you're on a private well or municipal water. Homes on wells throughout Bucks, Montgomery, Chester and Delaware counties commonly deal with hard water, iron staining, sulfur odor and, in some cases, bacteria. Homes on municipal water (Philadelphia and the surrounding suburbs) tend to deal more with chlorine or chloramine taste and odor, moderate hardness, and aging-pipe issues like lead. We test for both sets of concerns, whichever type of water you have.

Hard water itself isn't considered a health hazard, but its side effects add up — scale buildup that shortens the life of water heaters and appliances, spots on dishes and glassware, dry skin and hair, and laundry that never quite gets clean or bright. Over the years, scale can also restrict flow inside your home's pipes.

A few common signs: spots or film on dishes and shower glass, dry skin or hair after showering, a chlorine or metallic taste, discolored or cloudy water, or a rotten-egg smell. That said, plenty of contaminants — like lead, PFAS or bacteria — have no taste, smell or visible sign at all, which is why we recommend starting with a free water test rather than guessing.

Filtration generally means removing specific things from water — sediment, chlorine, iron or hardness minerals, for example — often for the whole house. Purification, like reverse osmosis, is a more thorough, multi-stage process that strips out the broadest range of contaminants, typically for drinking water at one or more faucets. Most homes end up using a combination of both: whole-house filtration or softening for the entire home, plus an RO drinking water system at the kitchen sink.

Well vs. City Water

Know Your Water Source

City water is treated and regularly tested by your municipality before it reaches your home, typically disinfected with chlorine or chloramine. Well water comes straight from the ground with no treatment or oversight at all — testing, treatment and maintenance are entirely up to you as the homeowner.

At minimum, we recommend testing for bacteria (coliform/E. coli), hardness, iron and pH, plus nitrates or arsenic if there's any local history of them. If you're closing on a home, many lenders already require a basic potability test — but that's often a bare minimum, not a full water quality picture. We offer a free in-home water test that goes further.

Many people do. Municipal treatment makes water safe to drink, but "safe" and "great-tasting, scale-free water" aren't the same thing. Chlorine or chloramine taste and odor, moderate hardness, and aging municipal or in-home plumbing (a lead risk in older homes) are all common even on well-run city systems.

We recommend testing well water at least once a year for bacteria, and any time you notice a change in taste, smell, color or pressure. If you have a UV sterilizer or other treatment system installed, annual testing also confirms it's still doing its job.

No — hardness (dissolved calcium and magnesium) is a nuisance issue, not a safety issue. It's completely separate from contamination like bacteria, heavy metals or chemicals, which is why a full water test looks at both hardness and safety-related contaminants, not just one or the other.

Water Softeners

Chlor-A-Soft® Water Softener Questions

Classic signs include white scale buildup around faucets and showerheads, soap that won't lather well, spots on dishes and glassware, and skin or hair that feel dry after washing. A free water test will give you an exact hardness reading in grains per gallon.

Traditional softeners use ion exchange — hard water passes through a resin bed that swaps calcium and magnesium ions for sodium ions. Our Chlor-A-Soft® system, designed for municipal water supplies, goes a step further by blending softening resin with carbon filtration media in one tank, so it also filters chlorine, chemicals and THM's/VOC's at the same time. Well water homes usually pair a standard softener with iron/sediment filtration instead, since there's no chlorine to filter out.

Yes. Softened water is safe for drinking, cooking and everyday use. The sodium added during softening is minimal — far less than what's in a typical serving of bread — though anyone on a strictly sodium-restricted diet should mention it to their doctor.

Not really. Most systems just need periodic salt refills, checked every few weeks and topped off as needed. Chlor-A-Soft® systems regenerate automatically on demand, so there's no manual cycling required.

True salt-based softeners actually remove hardness minerals from the water. Salt-free "conditioners" don't remove hardness — they alter its crystal structure so it's less likely to stick to surfaces, which helps with scale but won't give you the same soft-water feel on skin and hair. We install and service traditional salt-based systems for that more complete result.

Not on its own — a standard softener is built for hardness, not iron or sediment. If you're seeing iron staining, sulfur odor or sediment, that typically calls for iron/sediment pre-filtration ahead of your softener. We'll identify exactly what your water needs during your free test rather than guessing at a one-size-fits-all fix.

Reverse Osmosis

RO & Drinking Water Questions

Yes — RO purified water is widely considered some of the cleanest drinking water available, and many households drink it exclusively. Optional neutralizing, ceramic or alkaline filters can also be added to balance pH or add extra protection.

An under-sink RO system purifies water at one faucet, typically your kitchen sink. A whole-home RO system treats water for your entire house. We'll help you decide based on your goals and your water test results.

This varies by household water usage and quality, but most filters need replacement every 6-12 months, with the membrane lasting several years. We offer maintenance plans to keep your system performing at its best.

Whole-House Filtration

Whole-Home Filtration Questions

A whole-house (point-of-entry) filter treats every drop of water entering your home — showers, laundry, every faucet — while an under-sink or countertop filter (point-of-use) only treats water at one tap, usually the kitchen sink. Most households benefit from both: whole-house filtration or softening for the entire home, plus a dedicated RO system for drinking and cooking water.

Depending on what your water test shows, whole-house systems can target chlorine and chemical taste/odor, sediment and turbidity, iron and sulfur (well water), and general hardness minerals — often in combination, like our Chlor-A-Soft® system, which softens and filters chlorine/chemicals in one unit.

Not always. If your softener already includes carbon filtration media, like Chlor-A-Soft®, it's already handling both jobs for municipal water. Well water homes with iron, sulfur or sediment issues typically need a dedicated pre-filter installed ahead of the softener, since those contaminants can foul softening resin over time.

It depends on your water quality and household usage, but most whole-house filtration or softening media should be checked at least once a year. We're happy to set up a maintenance schedule when we install your system so nothing gets overlooked.

UV Sterilizers

UV Sterilizer Questions, Answered

If your home uses a private well, a UV sterilizer is one of the most effective ways to protect against bacteria, viruses and protozoa that municipal treatment plants would normally remove. Many mortgage lenders and local health departments also recommend or require water testing (and sometimes UV disinfection) for well water before closing on a home.

No. UV sterilization uses ultraviolet light to destroy the DNA of microorganisms so they can't reproduce — there's no chlorine or chemical residue added to your water.

A whole-home UV sterilizer is installed at your main water line, typically after sediment and carbon filtration, so every fixture in your home receives disinfected water — not just a single faucet.

No. UV disinfection handles biological contaminants (bacteria, viruses, protozoa) but doesn't remove hardness, chlorine, sediment or chemicals. It's typically installed alongside a whole-house filter or softener as the final disinfection step. See our UV Sterilizer Systems page for details.

The best way to know is a free in-home water test. If you're on well water, or you've had a positive coliform/E. coli test, a UV system is almost always worth adding.
